In recognition of the centenary of World War One, David has partnered with soprano Deborah Selig and pianist Clifton J. Noble to curate a recital of songs written during and inspired by that era. Entitled "Angel Spirits: Music of World War I," this eclectic program captures sentiments and reflections from many different perspectives during this climactic period of history. Composers include George Butterworth, André Caplet, Claude Debussy, Ivor Gurney, Charles Ives, Francis Poulenc, and Rudi Stefan. The recital also features new songs by Boston composer Gregory Zavracky, with texts by three female World War One poets, as well as a number of popular American songs, including selections by Irving Berlin and Jim Europe, director of the 369th Infantry “Harlem Hellfighters” Jazz Band. It has been presented on recital series in Northampton, Massachusetts and Hancock, New Hampshire, and will be performed in June 2018 at the Cosmos Club in Washington D.C.
This YouTube page features highlights of the program. We’re hoping to find other performance opportunities around the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day this coming November – please contact David through the website if you know of presenters who might be interested!
